    Default Thought stoppage

Thought stoppage is a psychological strategy that is widely used especially in treatment of anxiety (to stop anxious thoughts) and breaking habitual behaviours (such as smoking). Our thoughts and words influence our actions.Sometimes people think about things they don’t want to (often out of habit), to regain control (and break the habit) one should actively stop the thoughts or transform them into positive thoughts, in this manner we help ourselves.
Essentially to take responsibility for our thoughts and their influence and CHOOSE to modify them so that they are positive. So how is this done?
Usually an image or two that is appropriate for the person is chosen (brick wall, diversion sign, something significant). This image is then brought to the forefront of the mind when the negative thought occurs.
Accompanying the visual stimulus with a verbal and physical one, often makes the power of the stoppage technique stronger (the more senses we associate with something, the more tightly we bind to that path/thought/action).
Thus as well as visualisation one may want to shout “No” or “Stop” (in an office it may be prudent just to think it or say it quietly!) and clap or even give a little pinch! It is inherently re-training oneself to focus on something other than the negative item.

    Example
I’m trying to get on with my work, but I keep thinking of chocolate! So every time I think of chocolate I close my eyes (to stop any distractions) recall my diversion sign and follow the road to focus on my work. I also give myself a little pinch on the back of my hand to let me know it is not ok and accompany it with a stern “No”.
Ok, now I’ve made everyone want some chocolate right!

Remembering that the focus needs to be on oneself and positive reinforcement is also helpful. Therefore, if one manages <insert your own appropriate time period here> without thinking of the negative item, then a reward such as a movie, or an hour in the bath with a glass of wine, may be useful. The positive reinforcement may also have a verbal and physical output/support.
Following the example above, I’ve made it all day without chocolate, to reward myself I have a long bath with a glass of wine and say to myself a number of times “Well done, today I did well on focusing on my work, achieving results and enjoying my life, good job.”

Notice how the FOCUS is what I want NOT on the fact that I’ve avoided chocolate. The psyche is a strange and multifaceted thing, however this much we know; if one tells someone not to do something the mind immediately thinks of doing it!

    Don’t think of a dog.

    What happened?

Generally what happens is the mind only hears the main concept “dog” so immediately most people will have thought of a dog. That is very important to understand.

    Key points:

    1. Visualise appropriate imagery at the time of the negative thought. (stop sign, brick wall etc)
    2. Combine imagery with other senses, i.e. say “No” and give yourself a pinch
    3. Focus on WHAT YOU WANT (i.e. get work done) not on what you don’t want
    4. Use positive reinforcement to reward yourself
    5. Use language that praises you for doing well and getting what you want

If anyone has any questions please don’t hesitate ask.

    Awesome. Thanks for posting.

I actually did practice thought stoppage on something I was thinking about yesterday. It worked so well I actually forgot what it was that I told my mind to stop thinking about. LOL.

Wow how did I miss this the first time around. I've been trying really hard to block negative thoughts or thoughts of the past and think a lot more "selfishly" and positive lately.

    Thanks tigger!

This is definetivley a "Must Read" Post for everyone.
It is a very constructive strategy that done properly offers impressive results , as in psychology, "Beliveing is Seeing" not the the other way around , or even better "Where the Mind goes, the Body follows"

Thank you for posting it Tiger ;)

    Dear Rianaize,

We've all had our hearts hurt at some point or other, else or we would never have risked anything or be here. We're listening.

    All the best,
